Post Due

Dr. Berlin is not a fan of the traditional "due date."  The truth is that only 5% of babies are born on their due dates with a much larger number being born more than a week prior to or after the due date.  A much better system would be to calculate your due date based on your personal cycle length (rather than the first day of your last menstrual cycle, which assumes everyone has the same cycle length) and also to give a plus or minus 3 1/2 days to create a due week.  Aside from improper calculations the truth is that not every cupcake bakes in 24 minutes.  As Dr. Berlin likes to say, "You want your cupcake out when it is fully baked, not when 24 minutes go by."

Many obstetricians have become hypersensitive to the due date.  If you are a couple of days 'post due' they start pushing you (no pun intended) into considering medical induction or a planned C-section.  While some cases legitimately demand such intervention, most do not.  Our care close to the due date and beyond consists of safely and naturally removing obstructions that may be preventing your baby from finding the proper pre-birth positioning which initiates labor and helps you progress naturally through the stages of delivery.  The techniques include massage and release of the soft tissues around your pelvis, and normalization of the pelvis itself.  In some cases we also utilize acupuncture and moxabustion when appropriate.  It is not our goal to oppose medicine or your medical doctor, but instead to support nature in every way possible, while still being open to the need for medical intervention in certain cases.
